Swamp Rat Knife Works has used several
steels in the past, however, the majority of our knives are
made of either SR101 or D2. Please check the knife
specifications to determine what materials are used in the
knife you are interested in.
SR101-- (a variation of 52100) is the combination of an
extremely fine-grained tool steel and a proprietary multi-step
tempering protocol. This process includes the incorporation of
a deep cryogenic treatment for grain refinement (and in some
knives) differential tempering which adds greatly to the
overall toughness and
strength.
D2--
In the performance arena, it is nearly impossible
to match what Swamp Rat is getting out of SR-101 in certain
areas. The combination of incredible edge holding and
toughness are unparalleled in the industry. However, D-2
has a much better resistance to the elements in an uncoated or
satin finished format than does SR-101. D-2 rivals ATS-34 for
stain resistance and in fact proves to be nearly identical in
this area in our accelerated salt spray corrosion tests. The
heat treatment and finish of D-2 can have a major impact on
its corrosion resistance. When done properly, a D-2 blade
requires minimal maintenance. Cleaning and oiling are a good
idea but simply wiping the blade off and keeping it fairly dry
will usually be all that is required for proper care.
In edge holding D-2 is an excellent steel and easily
surpasses SR-101 when cutting harder materials such as steel
banding, bone, etc. . . In soft to medium materials they are
very similar in edge holding. In chopping and high impact
applications, SR-101 easily surpasses D-2. Because of
this, we do not recommend that any D-2 blades be longer
than 5”.
In extremely thin edges, D-2 will prove to be
a superior choice. The same qualities that make SR-101 a great
steel for abuse, play against the house when it comes to
extremely thin cross sections. Under contact (cutting not
chopping) with harder materials such as metal banding, bone,
rock, etc. . . SR-101 will roll whereas D-2 will prove to be
the clear winner in these applications. However, if you do any
heavy lateral stressing on a thin cross sectioned D-2 blade,
you may be glad that your Swamp Rat D-2 blade is backed by the
best no BS warranty in the industry.
Resiprene C
Handle--(Think of it
as an all-terrain truck tire with better chemical
resistance). Resiprene C handles have all the advantages
of rubber handles without any of the disadvantages. They
are comfortable, shock absorbing, slip resistant when wet, and
provide insulation from the cold. Unlike Kraton, Resiprene C
is a Non-hygroscopic material which means that it will neither
"take on" or "emit" fluids. This quality not only gives them
unparalleled durability but makes them extremely easy to keep
clean as dirt will simply not stick to them. It is impervious
to salt water, petroleum based chemicals and is much more
resistant to higher and colder temps than is Kraton. Resiprene
C is likewise impervious to the powerful insect repellent,
DEET. All Swamp Rat handles are fully textured to supply
a slip-resistant purchase in any grip configuration. So,
whether you hold the blade in a saber grip, reverse grip,
upside down grip, side grip, or whatever which way you are
required to hold it for your particular application, you will
be assured of having a secure hold.
Micarta
Handle-- Micarta handles are extremely
durable, resistant to most chemicals, and can be used in the
harshest environments without complications. We offer
micarta on some models for versatility and user
preference.
Blade
Coating--The blade coating is a black or tan wrinkle/crinkle
coat. Through extensive testing, it has been determined
this is the best coating available for knives seeing heavy
use. This coating is ideal for extreme use knives because the
raised areas will take the initial wear and begin to smooth
out and after much use that part of the blade will still have
the finish only smoothed out. Only after the finish has
smoothed considerably do you begin to see any of the coating
begin to wear off. The life of this rough finish is extended
when you compare it to smooth finishes of the same
thickness.
